Police stop traffic-violating vehicles at “all costs” – brave action or unnecessary risk?

The incident in which Captain Le Dinh Cong, an officer of the Riot Police Team of the Hanoi City Police, was hit by two young men and suffered serious injuries has caused a stir in public opinion, and the public has questioned the handling method of the police force.

According to information from the Hanoi City Police, on the evening of August 21, while performing his duties serving the A80 parade, Captain Cong rushed out to stop a motorbike driven by two young men, aged 16 and 17, who were driving at high speed on a prohibited road, leading to a collision that left Captain Cong seriously injured.

The two young men were also injured due to a fall from their motorbike and are being treated at the hospital, and at the same time, the Hanoi City Police have charged the two young guys with “murder” under Article 123 of the Criminal Code, and detained them for investigation.

According to their statement, because the motorbike driver did not know that the road was prohibited and when he saw the police blocking him, the driver accelerated to escape, leading to the accident.

Immediately afterwards, Director of Hanoi City Police Lieutenant General Nguyen Thanh Tung visited and awarded a Certificate of Merit from Hanoi City to Captain Cong, recognizing his “brave act of forgetting himself for the country and serving the people.”

However, observers and public opinion on social networks questioned the necessity of the brutal actions of traffic police officers who often rush out to block high-speed motorbikes or “cling” to cars in traffic – this is a common action on the streets.

This is a manifestation of confusion in protecting key targets, with the CCTV security camera system covering Hanoi, the force can easily track and arrest violators later, instead of risking their lives. Furthermore, the fact that two young men were injured has also made public opinion believe that this was an unnecessary reckless action that could have been avoided with safer measures and not really serving the people.

The actions of the traffic police that have been criticized for tarnishing the image of the police are contrary to the directives of General Secretary To Lam, and should be strictly prohibited to avoid unnecessary accidents, and are not close to the people.
